Norman Davis (academic)

Norman Davis MBE FBA (16 May 1913 – 2 December 1989) was Merton Professor of English Language and Literature, University of Oxford, 1959–1980 in succession to J. R. R. Tolkien.

Davis was born in Dunedin, New Zealand. Educated at Otago Boys' High School, Dunedin, Otago University, and Merton College, Oxford (Rhodes Scholar 1934).
